Target: Low/Moderate risk                 Age: 13-16 years
In response to requests from Managers and Practitioners operating in Youth and Juvenile Justice settings, we commissioned Professor Robert Ross to develop a short intervention programme aimed specifically at the 13-16 years age group who are assessed at low or moderate risk of re-offending or likely to exhibit anti-social behaviour.

The Programme has been designed "as an introductory programme for adolescents who lack essential pro-social skills and values and are engaging in various disruptive and anti-social behaviours at home, in school or in the community. It provides a core curriculum, cognitive and emotional skills and values". (Ross R. R.) This programme is being used in a range of settings, in community educational and residential settings including main stream schools for use with disruptive pupils

The targets of the programme relate to: Skilled thinking, consequential thinking, managing thoughts and emotions, values enhancement, problem identification and thinking of solutions, managing conflict, detecting thinking errors.   For more information or to book e-mail wendy@cognitivecentre.com

VENUE:                     Reid Macewen Training Centre, Bishopton
COST:                       £850 + VAT per person

“Offending Is Not The Only Choice – Revised” was developed in 2002 from the Cognitive Centre Foundation’s original programme and that of Dr Barbara Armstrong’s Criminal Lifestyles Programme. The former programme was evaluated in its adult form by a team led by Gill McIvor on behalf of the Scottish Executive and reported a large decrease in reconviction, whilst in a meta analysis conducted by Paul Gendreau at the University of New Brunswick the programme suite developed by Dr Barbara Armstrong was evaluated as one of the two best performing programmes to be found in the literature. Current pilots of the programme are also reporting positive findings.

“Violence Is Not The Only Choice” is part of the same suite of programmes as “Offending Is Not The Only Choice” and whilst using common tools to address basic offending related issues also includes sessions addressing anger /aggression, assertion/conflict management and seeks to develop these and other ’slow down skills’ into a self management/relapse prevention plan. By the end of this training course, participants will:

1.             Be introduced to the theoretical framework underpinning the programmes
2.             Be aware of the key effective practice skills which support the programmes
3.             Have practiced these core skills, problem solving and sociomoral reasoning
necessary to facilitate the programmes
4.             Be prepared to start to deliver the programmes
5.             Be aware of the theoretical underpinning of each session and the associated
objectives
6.             Address the implementation issues in relation to the organisation, staff and
programme participants For more information or to book e-mail wendy@cognitivecentre.com
