The
Basic LSI Training
The
Cognitive Centre offers a two day In-House training course for up to 15 participants
designed to equip participants to deliver either the LSI-R or the YLS/CMI,
through the use of the manuals and "Quikscore" forms.
The aims of the basic training course are that participants
will:
- Understand the theory and research underpinning the
instruments
- Be able to administer and interpret the instruments
- Be willing to make responsible use of the LSI-R/YLS/CMI
in their work
The first day of the course comprises an input on the theoretical
and research frameworks used in the development of the LSI system and instruction
in administering the instrument.
Between the two parts of the course participants are expected
to undertake a minimum of six tests. Day two is then based on a review of
practice including an analysis of participant's work, and looks at the wider
application of the instrument.
The
Cognitive Centre also offers regionally based LSI-R and YLS/CMI Basic Training
"Open" Courses. The main purpose of these courses is to train new
staff in services which have already trained the main body of their staff
to use the instruments. They are also available to individuals wishing to
develop new skills in assessment and provide an opportunity for interested
services to obtain a deeper understanding of the LSI system, and what the
training entails.
The basic training courses have been very well received
by course participants with high levels of satisfaction expressed concerning
the content and methods of training.
After basic training the Cognitive Centre continues to
offer support and advice to both LSI-R users and their services

- addresses quality control
- explores how SER/PSR writing can be informed by the

and research underpinning the LSI

The Cognitive Centre offers an active "aftercare"
service to both LSI users and their services. We offer advice and guidance
on all matters relating to the organisational use of the LSI including quality
control, risk bandings, and the development of profiles of criminogenic need.
LSI Data Collection And
Processing
Organisations using the LSI will very rapidly accumulate data on offender
populations in their area. In order to capitalise on the opportunities offered
LSI-R data needs to be processed and analysed.
The Cognitive Centre is able to either advise on the development of information
systems, or process LSI-R data for services. The Centre is able to:
- input data and develop a database
- provide analyses of risk levels and needs of offender
populations
- assist in the provision of reconviction follow-up studies
where required
