Assessment Instrument Trainning

The Basic LSI Training

LSI-R The Cognitive Centre offers a two day In-House training course for up to 15 participants designed to equip participants to deliver either the LSI-R or the YLS/CMI, through the use of the manuals and "Quikscore" forms.

The aims of the basic training course are that participants will:

  • Understand the theory and research underpinning the instruments
  • Be able to administer and interpret the instruments
  • Be willing to make responsible use of the LSI-R/YLS/CMI in their work

LSI-R

The first day of the course comprises an input on the theoretical and research frameworks used in the development of the LSI system and instruction in administering the instrument.

Between the two parts of the course participants are expected to undertake a minimum of six tests. Day two is then based on a review of practice including an analysis of participant's work, and looks at the wider application of the instrument.

The Cognitive Centre also offers regionally based LSI-R and YLS/CMI Basic Training "Open" Courses. The main purpose of these courses is to train new staff in services which have already trained the main body of their staff to use the instruments. They are also available to individuals wishing to develop new skills in assessment and provide an opportunity for interested services to obtain a deeper understanding of the LSI system, and what the training entails.

The basic training courses have been very well received by course participants with high levels of satisfaction expressed concerning the content and methods of training.

After basic training the Cognitive Centre continues to offer support and advice to both LSI-R users and their services

Refresher Training

This one day training course is designed for individuals who have already undertaken the basic training course to deliver the LSI-R and/or YLS/CMI. It helps to improve inter-rater reliability and analysis and interpretation of test results. The course:

  • revisits testing procedures
  • addresses quality control
  • explores how SER/PSR writing can be informed by the LSI-R/YLS/CMI

The LSI Advanced Training Programme

This programme is targeted at practitioners and Senior Practitioners with experience of using the "Level Of Service Inventory - Revised" or the "Youth Version Level of Service/Case Management System" and is particularly appropriate for Services using the LSI-R who wish to develop centres of expertise in the use of the LSI-R within their organisation.
Individuals Trained in this programme will be able to undertake:

  • in-house consultancy and support for users
  • data analysis and interpretation
  • quality control tests

Briefings For Managers

Where managers are not required to administer the LSI-R, but require a working knowledge of the instrument the Cognitive Centre provides one day briefings for managers which will:

  • provide managers with an understanding of the theory and research underpinning the LSI
  • explore issues of quality control
  • inform managers about the wider applications of the LSI including the development of risk/needs profiles for offender populations
  • understand the role of the LSI-R and YLS/CMI in case management

Briefings For Other Staff

Whilst the LSI-R can only be used by suitably qualified and trained staff its use impacts on all members of the organisation. This half day briefing is designed to ensure that participants understand:-

  • How the LSI-R works and how it is used
  • The uses and potential uses of the LSI-R within the organisation

Support to Users

The Cognitive Centre offers an active "aftercare" service to both LSI users and their services. We offer advice and guidance on all matters relating to the organisational use of the LSI including quality control, risk bandings, and the development of profiles of criminogenic need.

LSI Data Collection And Processing

Organisations using the LSI will very rapidly accumulate data on offender populations in their area. In order to capitalise on the opportunities offered LSI-R data needs to be processed and analysed.
The Cognitive Centre is able to either advise on the development of information systems, or process LSI-R data for services. The Centre is able to:

  • input data and develop a database
  • provide analyses of risk levels and needs of offender populations
  • assist in the provision of reconviction follow-up studies where required

Training - Risk Assessment

This course, which can be geared to meet the needs of specific groups, draws on the Cognitive Centre's considerable experience as trainers in the field of risk assessment within criminal justice settings. The course looks at a range of issues including:

  • Theoretical and research background
  • The skills of risk assessment
  • Management of risk
  • Using structured risk assessment instruments
  • Ethical considerations
  • Risk/Need factors in young people
