What We Do

Assessment

Clinical and Non-clinical Psychometric Tests and Structured Assessments for use in a range of organisations and settings.  These include a range of risk/need instruments such as the YLS, LSI-R and LS-CMI.

Effective Practice Skills

Our work in partnership with Professor Chris Trotter of Monash University, Australia to develop pro-social modelling training is highly regarded throughout the UK.  We have developed a number of initiatives to assist organisations in implementing this training and are able to provide a range of different modules to take account of particular client groups.  As a result of a latest investment in this area we have also recently trialled a one and a half day version for prison officers.

Many organisations are keen to take on the responsibility of in-house training and we are now also able to offer a Train the Trainer package with continued support and quality control oversight.  Whilst heavily influenced by the work of Professor  Chris Trotter  there have been major developments in this field - in particular the work of Dr Jim Bonta with individual staff, and Professor Don Andrews and Craig Dowden with the development of core correctional practice guidelines.

The application of this model is also proving effective in different settings and in keeping with the evidence base a version is now also available for intervention with families – a family problem solving module.

Programmes

The Centre has had a lead role in introducing intervention programmes into various settings. Our work is guided by the principle that any intervention we support has been developed and supported by leading programme developers. We are privileged to work with illustrious individuals such as Professor Robert Ross and Dr Barbara Armstrong and we now have a range of interventions for different client groups within those different settings.

Our work over the past few years has seen us develop interventions, usually in partnership with various organisations, relating to youth gangs, hate crime,  prejudice and fire setting behaviour.

Our programme training is usually delivered on an In-House basis, but we regularly run Open Courses in various locations and details of these can be found by clicking the Open Courses tab.

Interventions and programmes that are relevant to your setting or client group  are  easily accessible by clicking on the appropriate tab on the left hand side of the screen, or feel free to contact the office.

Core Skills Training

Responding to demand, the Centre developed a range of training initiatives which perhaps can be best described as core skills. These skills are linked to the effective practice agenda and range from the more technical skills such as programme implementation and clinical supervisions to practice based skills such as group work. Wherever possible we work in partnership with an organisation to customise the training to a best fit approach and therefore meet the needs of that organisation.

We also have developed a range of events in order to meet specific situations hence events such as an Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Techniques and the RNR Approach (Risk, Need, Responsivity) have proved highly successful.

The importance of motivational interviewing techniques is highlighted in the literature and we are now also able to offer training in formats applicable to adolescents or adults.

To ensure the greatest level of flexibility, these courses are not only run on an In-House basis but also as Open Courses to cater for smaller organisations and individuals, or anyone who was not able to attend previous In House Courses.

Consultancy

The Centre has been involved in a range of activities which include support advice and consultancy. These relate to the development of particular interventions for specific settings together with general advice on particular issues.

Our consultants are available on an international basis to help us with this area of work and many of our consultants have been involved with us in particular projects in the UK.

If you have an issue that you think we could help with then in the first instance you should contact the centre where we will be happy to talk through the situation and if appropriate recommend a particular course of action.
