An exciting and informative conference in London aimed at people working with or supporting children and young people on the Autism spectrum.
The Cognitive Centre is proud to bring you a conference with a difference. On Thursday 23 May 2019 we will be spending the day with some of the most unique, interesting and forward thinking people in the world of autism.
Greater understanding suggests that more than 1 in 100 individuals in the UK have autism spectrum disorder. The condition varies significantly but close links with ADHD, learning difficulties and mental health issues present significant challenges for treatment and support where it is suggested less than 1 in 4 people working in this field have had specialist training. We will be spending the day with some of the most unique, interesting and forward thinking people in the world of autism with focused presentations from the following experienced professional speakers and organisations:
Sine Møller – National Board of Social Services in Denmark
Our host for the day will be Sine Møller, Psychologist and Speciality Consultant from the National Board of Social Services in Denmark. Sine will open our day by sharing the pioneering work carried out throughout Denmark in the field of autism. Here she will cover subjects such as the reasons behind absence from school and how to deal with the issue, right through to the increased risk of autistic children falling victim to violent or sexual abuse.
Dominic Weston – Triple-P (Positive Parenting Programme)
Dominic Weston is a training and implementation consultant for Triple P (Positive Parenting Programme) in the United Kingdom. The Triple P Programme aims to support the parents of children with Learning Disabilities, developmental delay, additional needs and/or challenging behaviour. The programme is recommended in NICE guidelines for Learning Disabilities/ Challenging Behaviour. Dominic will talk about the principles behind the programme and share some research, implementation examples and outcomes to families.
Lyn Kendall – Kendall Tuition
As well as being a qualified psychologist running her own business Kendall Tuition for gifted and talented children, Lynn is also Mensa’s gifted child consultant. She has brought up a profoundly gifted son, so Lyn sees the issues surrounding high IQ from all angles! Her expertise is regularly sought by education professionals and government, and she is in demand from the media to talk about the needs of very bright children. Lyn is also consultant to the popular Channel 4 programme Child Genius.
Joanna M. Lee Davies
Joanna runs an ASD unit in a special school in Wales which caters for children with a diagnosis of ASD, without a learning difficulty but with complex autism needs. She is in her final year of a Ph.D research degree in Psychology – researching the overlap between autism and attachment. She regularly sits on the Special Educational Needs decision making panel in Neath Port Talbot LEA.
Rianne Silvey – Hogrefe
Rianne Silvey, is the Assessment and Psychometrics Consultant for Hogrefe Ltd, Europe’s leading publisher of psychometric assessments and psychology books and journals. She will provide information concerning products and services that support an autism diagnosis, including ADOS-2 and ADI-R assessments and training, a new e-learning therapy intervention programme for parents, and a new early childhood screening tool for SLTs.
Michael Barton
Our different day would not be complete without Michael. Author of two books “Its Raining Cats and Dogs” and “A Different kettle of Fish”, Michael defines himself as having high-functioning autism and will give us his insight into what it is like “sitting on the fence” between the neurotypical and autistic worlds.
Sara Harvey and Wendy Thomas
The National Autism Team is funded by the Welsh Government to support the implementation of the Refreshed National Strategic Action Plan (2016) and Delivery Plan (2018). Hosted by the Welsh Local Government Association and public Health Wales, the National Autism Team comprises a small team who focus on improving the lives of autistic people in Wales. Wendy and Sara will present the strategic context of the work of the team and how they engage with stakeholders to progress a responsive and valued set of services to autistic people, parents and carers and professionals across Wales.
